McMinnville Tennessee Tragedy: Thea Shelton, 8, Remembered After Family Shooting Leaves Community in Shock

The quiet community of McMinnville, Tennessee, is grieving after the heartbreaking loss of Thea Shelton, an 8-year-old student whose life ended in a devastating family tragedy that has shaken neighbors across Warren County.

Authorities say deputies with the Warren County Sheriff’s Office were called to a home on the 200 block of Greenwood Drive around 2:10 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2026. Sheriff Jackie D. Matheny Jr. said the call came in as a request for a welfare check. Deputies arrived at the home and quickly realized something was terribly wrong.

After an initial assessment outside the residence, additional officers were called in to assist. When law enforcement officers entered the home, they discovered three people dead inside. Investigators later determined the deaths were connected to a murder-suicide involving members of the same family.

According to authorities, Joseph Nicholas Shelton Jr. fatally shot Randi Jean Shelton and their young daughter, Thea Shelton, before turning the gun on himself. Officials say there is no ongoing threat to the public, though investigators are continuing to review the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

News of Thea’s death spread quickly through the McMinnville community and especially through the halls of Hickory Creek Elementary School, where she was a student. Teachers and classmates remember her as a bright and joyful child who carried a smile that could light up a room.

Friends and neighbors say the loss of such a young life has been especially painful. Many families connected to the school are struggling to explain the tragedy to their own children while trying to process the shock themselves.

Sheriff Matheny asked the community to keep the families affected by the tragedy in their thoughts and prayers. He also acknowledged the emotional toll on the deputies and first responders who were among the first to arrive at the scene.

In the days since the incident, the community of McMinnville has come together in quiet support for one another. While the investigation continues, many are choosing to focus on remembering the young girl whose laughter and kindness touched so many in her short life.

Though Thea Shelton’s life was far too brief, those who knew her say her warmth and spirit will not be forgotten. In classrooms, homes, and hearts across McMinnville, her memory continues to shine.
