Fruitport Township is reeling after a tragic shooting Saturday night that took the life of a young boy who was beloved by his school and neighbors. Fourteen-year-old Ryler Yager, an eighth grader at Fruitport Middle School, died at the scene of a reported shooting just after 7:15 p.m. in the 2900 block of Romedius Street.
Police say officers from the Fruitport Township Police Department responded to a call about shots fired on Saturday evening. When first responders arrived, they found Ryler unresponsive. Despite immediate aid, he was pronounced dead at the location.

Investigators from the Michigan State Police have taken the lead on the case because of an affiliation between the victim’s family and the local police department. Fruitport officers are assisting as requested, but details about the circumstances and what led up to the shooting are still scarce.
Officials confirmed that another minor was holding a firearm during the incident and that it discharged, resulting in Ryler’s death, though it remains unclear how exactly the events unfolded. No arrests or charges have been announced yet as detectives continue to sort through evidence and interview witnesses.
Ryler’s school community is heartbroken. In a message to families, district leaders described him as a bright student with a warm personality who brought joy to those around him. Counselors and support staff have been made available to help students and staff cope with the loss.
Fruitport Township, a close-knit community about 10 miles southeast of Muskegon on Michigan’s west side, has been deeply shaken. Local leaders have urged residents to come together in support of the Yager family while respecting their privacy during this painful time.
Authorities continue to ask anyone with information to come forward and assist with the investigation. Law enforcement is working to provide answers to the community as the case progresses, and they stressed the importance of relying only on verified information as the probe remains active.
