ALBANY TWP., BRADFORD – Head-On Crash on Route 220 Claims Former Fire Chief and Wife

A quiet Tuesday afternoon turned tragic on Route 220 when a head-on collision south of Dushore left two people dead and a community reeling. Former fire chief Frank Yonkin and his wife Bonnie were killed when their car slammed into a tri-axle dump truck near Harney Road.

The wrecking impact was so severe that emergency crews pronounced both victims dead at the scene shortly after arriving around 3:45 p.m. Traffic was tied up for hours as crews from several fire stations and rescue units worked in grim conditions to clear the road and assist investigators.

The truck driver, whose name has not been released, remained at the scene and cooperated with police. There have been no charges announced and State Police say it is too early to determine if speed, distraction, vehicle failure, or other factors played a role.

Officials have confirmed the couple’s identities and paid tribute to Frank’s years of service leading the Dushore Fire Company. As chief, he was credited with modernizing equipment and training volunteers to respond safely under pressure. Bonnie was remembered as his partner in life and in service, always at events supporting firefighters and their families.

Witnesses who passed the scene later described twisted metal and emergency lights flashing against the winter dusk. Some drivers had to be rerouted miles around the site, adding to the somber mood as word spread through local towns about the deadly crash.

Inside the firehouse where Frank once led, members say the loss is personal. Veterans and new recruits alike say they feel as though a beloved teacher and friend has gone. They speak softly about Frank’s booming voice giving orders and Bonnie’s encouraging words to families after calls.

Investigators say the crash remains under active review. They’re collecting information from the truck’s driver, examining road conditions, and expecting to release a fuller picture once the initial work at the scene is complete. The community is left holding memories of two lives that touched many.
