In south Phoenix on Monday night, 34-year-old Dylan Rockford Fohrenkam’s life ended after a tense encounter with Phoenix police that left him dead and an officer hurt. Just after 8 p.m., officers were called to the area near 19th Avenue and Broadway Road for reports that a man had pointed a gun at his own daughters. When officers arrived, they were directed to Fohrenkam, who was standing in a nearby park.
He left the park on a bicycle as police approached and rode a short distance through the neighborhood. He then got off the bike and ran toward a nearby home. Officers say they tried to stop him with less-lethal tools, but those efforts failed to slow him down. A second officer tried to physically restrain him, and in the struggle both men fell to the ground.

It was at that moment that Fohrenkam’s gun went off. The discharge struck both him and the officer. Emergency crews rushed Fohrenkam to a hospital, where he later died from his wounds. The officer was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and has since been released.
Friends and neighbors in the community are struggling to understand the events that led up to the tragedy. People who knew Fohrenkam describe him in personal terms, remembering him as more than just a name in a police report. His actions before the police arrived remain under investigation, and authorities say they are working to piece together a full account of what happened.
The Phoenix Police Department has said the case is active and under review. Investigators are sorting through witness accounts, body camera footage, and other evidence as they work to answer tough questions about use of force and decision-making in high-stress moments.
Fohrenkam’s daughters, the ones who were reported to be with him before the police arrived, have been left to grieve without their father. Community leaders, while cautious about details, have spoken about the broader impact on families and neighbors who witnessed the aftermath.
In the wake of the incident, conversations about police tactics and mental health in crisis situations are gaining renewed attention in south Phoenix. Families and advocates are calling for transparency as they mourn and try to make sense of a night that ended in loss.
