Daniel Crumrine, a 51‑year‑old golf course superintendent for the Springfield Park District, died Thursday after a workplace accident at Lincoln Greens Golf Course in Springfield. Emergency crews were called to the course’s maintenance building around 10:30 a.m., where Crumrine was found beneath a lawn tractor. He was rushed to a local hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Friends and colleagues described Crumrine as a steady presence on the greens, someone who cared deeply about the grounds and the people he worked with. For years he oversaw turf care and equipment at the park district’s busiest golf course. When crews located him under the machine, it was clear this was no routine day.

The Sangamon County Coroner later ruled his death the result of crush injuries. Officials say there is no indication of foul play. Investigators from the Park District Police and the coroner’s office are still trying to piece together exactly how Crumrine came to be under the tractor.
Springfield Park District Police Chief Patrick Murphy, who knew Crumrine personally, called the news “horrible and shocking.” Murphy said nothing about the early investigation suggests anything other than a tragic accident, but declined to elaborate on how the incident unfolded.
Crumrine had worked for the district for many years in a leadership role maintaining golf course grounds. In addition to his day‑to‑day duties at Lincoln Greens, he was known in local turfgrass circles and had ties to fellow professionals across central Illinois.
Lincoln Greens sits on the south side of Springfield near Lake Springfield. It is an 18‑hole public championship course that draws golfers from across the region. The Park District operates several other golf facilities, but Lincoln Greens is among the most‑played.
Family members and co‑workers were left reeling by the sudden loss. A district statement said staff were “shocked and deeply saddened” and offered prayers for Crumrine’s loved ones. No funeral arrangements have been announced.
The Park District and county offices continue their investigation into the incident. There is no timeline yet for when more information might be released or when a community remembrance for Crumrine might be held.
