A routine court order service turned deadly Tuesday night in Washington County when deputies shot and killed 52-year-old Christopher Allen Smith on Driftwood Lane. Authorities say the shooting happened while officers were attempting to carry out an Emergency Custody Order issued by a judge.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that deputies responded on February 17, 2026, to take Smith into custody under the court directive. Such orders authorize temporary detention for evaluation. Deputies made contact at the residence, but officials say the situation escalated fast.

During the encounter, authorities reported that Smith became involved in an altercation with deputies. Officials stated that he produced a knife and allegedly threatened them. At that point, deputies opened fire.
After the shots were fired, deputies immediately began administering medical aid. Emergency personnel arrived shortly afterward, but Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.
Law enforcement confirmed that no deputies were hurt during the incident. The identities of the deputies involved have not been released, and officials have not detailed how many shots were fired.
An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday, February 19, at the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke. That process will establish the official cause and manner of death.
The investigation remains active. It is being handled jointly by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Virginia State Police, and the Washington County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office. Authorities say additional information will be shared once the investigation progresses. For now, the focus remains on reviewing the actions taken, the sequence of events, and the decisions made during those critical moments on Driftwood Lane.
