Late Monday night, a quiet stretch of highway in Prince George’s County turned into a tragic scene after a violent crash along the southbound lanes of U.S. Route 301 near Brandywine Road. Maryland State Police say the collision happened just before midnight and involved a Nissan passenger vehicle and a Freightliner semi-truck traveling in the same direction.
Investigators say the Nissan, driven by 39-year-old Douglas Orlando Smith, struck the rear of the large tractor-trailer while both vehicles were moving southbound along the busy highway. Exactly what caused the Nissan to crash into the back of the truck is still under investigation.

Emergency crews rushed to the area moments after the crash was reported. When first responders arrived, they found severe damage to the Nissan. Authorities confirmed that Smith died at the scene. A passenger riding inside the vehicle was also pronounced dead at the location. Officials have not yet released the passenger’s name while they work to notify family members.
The driver of the Freightliner semi-truck was not hurt in the collision, according to state police. After the crash, several lanes of the highway were shut down so investigators and emergency crews could safely work the scene.
Traffic along that section of U.S. 301 slowed dramatically as troopers documented evidence and cleared wreckage from the roadway. Officials say the highway remained partially closed for about five hours overnight before crews finally reopened all lanes to drivers.
Crashes involving large commercial trucks often require lengthy investigations. The massive size and weight difference between tractor-trailers and passenger vehicles can lead to devastating damage when collisions occur.
Investigators typically examine several factors in these cases. Troopers may look at vehicle speed, road conditions, driver actions, mechanical issues, and the overall visibility at the time of the crash. Weather conditions and traffic flow can also become part of the review.
For now, authorities say no contributing cause has been announced. The Maryland State Police confirmed the investigation remains active as troopers continue gathering details about the final moments before the collision. Meanwhile, the deaths of Smith and the unidentified passenger have left another painful reminder of how quickly life can change on a busy highway.
