Taunton House Blast: Inside the Morning Horror that Left a Mom and Daughter Fighting for Life

Taunton, Mass. — A sudden blast shattered the calm on Plain Street Wednesday morning, blowing out windows, rattling doorframes, and leaving a home in ruins. When firefighters arrived at 78 Plain Street around 9:50 a.m., they found a three-family house swallowed in flames and a once-quiet street full of panic.

Inside that home were 25-year-old Lucitha Blanc and her 2-year-old daughter, Jenelle Germilus. Lucitha escaped the first wave of fire but then sprinted back into the burning house when she noticed Jenelle still inside. That choice has become the defining moment of this tragedy. Both were badly burned in the rescue. Lucitha was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with severe burns. Jenelle was flown to Hasbro Children’s Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Witnesses described the explosion as earth-shaking. Snow that had fallen just days earlier made everything worse. Fire trucks had to navigate narrow lanes lined with snowbanks. Hydrants were buried and had to be dug out before crews could get water on the blaze. Despite the obstacles, firefighters and police worked together, pulling neighbors to safety and protecting nearby homes.

The house where the blast occurred is a total loss. Eight residents were forced out, left with few belongings and deep uncertainty. Two adjacent homes were damaged, their families shaken but unharmed. Emergency officials opened a shelter for those left without heat or shelter in the frigid winter weather.

Fire officials say the cause of the explosion is still unknown. Teams from local and state agencies are investigating, sifting through rubble and questioning residents. For now, the focus is on recovery and understanding what set off such a violent blast in a familiar neighborhood.

Those who live nearby are trying to make sense of what happened. Some spoke of shattered glass and how the ground trembled. Others talked about watching neighbors help each other even before emergency crews arrived. For many, the image of a mother running back into danger to save her daughter is burned into their memories. In the days ahead, as Lucitha and Jenelle fight to heal, the community around them is left to piece together the shock, the loss, and the fragile hope that both will pull through.
