BONNEAU GRIEVES AS HIT-AND-RUN LEAVES JEANIETTRA JONES DEAD

Bonneau, South Carolina — A hit-and-run early Friday morning claimed the life of 34-year-old Jeaniettra Avonne Jones from Moncks Corner. Around 3:10 a.m., Jones was hit by a vehicle while walking on North Highway 52, and she was pronounced dead at the scene by the Berkeley County Coroner’s Office.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the vehicle fled before officers arrived. At this point investigators have not released what kind of vehicle was involved or why it left the scene. Troopers are asking for tips and looking for anyone who might have seen a car driving away from the area just before the crash.

Those who knew Jones say the news came as a shock. She was described as a close friend, a caring neighbor and someone always ready to help others. Her sudden death has left a community wrestling with grief and disbelief, especially among those who saw her regularly in Moncks Corner.

Authorities spent Friday morning reconstructing the scene, marking evidence and talking with anyone who might have seen Jones before the collision. Residents said they saw patrol vehicles and investigators along Highway 52 throughout the day, and many stopped to pay their respects.

Jones’ loved ones gathered informally later that afternoon, sharing stories about her life. Some spoke about her sense of humor, others about her generosity. Many said that out of tragedy, they hope something good can come — that awareness of pedestrian safety will rise, and that someone who knows what happened will step forward.

Investigators have not said whether weather or road conditions played a role, but troopers continue to examine every possible detail. As of Friday evening, the search for the vehicle involved was ongoing, and law enforcement urged anyone with information to contact authorities.

Friends and family have started planning how they will honor Jones at a memorial service, wanting to focus on her life and the impact she made on others. The loss has deeply touched many, and the community is rallying to support those closest to her during this painful time.
