At about 6 a.m. on February 26, emergency crews rushed to Budds Creek Road near Stines Store Road after reports of a serious collision. A Chevy Blazer and a Mazda sedan had collided with devastating force on a quiet stretch of Route 234.
Police say 72-year-old Dale Bradley from King George, Virginia was behind the wheel of his Chevrolet Blazer, heading eastbound when another vehicle suddenly veered into his lane. That car, a 2016 Mazda 6 driven by 22-year-old Nathan Cooper of Mechanicsville, crossed the centerline and struck Bradley’s truck directly head-on. The impact was severe and Bradley was killed at the scene.
First responders found Bradley unresponsive and pronounced him dead before the sun had fully risen. Witnesses described a somber mood as firefighters worked to clear wreckage and investigators began piecing together how two lives were changed forever within moments. Bradley was well known in his community, and news of his sudden passing traveled quickly among family and friends.
Cooper survived but was seriously injured. A Maryland State Police helicopter lifted him from the scene and flew him to Capital Region Hospital in Largo. Officials later described his injuries as serious but not life-threatening. Friends and relatives gathered at the hospital, relieved he would live but shaken by how close the outcome had been to another tragedy.
The Maryland State Police CRASH Team is now handling the investigation. Officers continue to interview witnesses and examine physical evidence to understand how the Mazda crossed into oncoming traffic.
