Indianapolis: Rachael Rakes Killed in West Side Porch Shooting That Shook Community

Indianapolis — Rachael Rakes was killed in a sudden shooting on the city’s west side that left a neighborhood in shock and a family in deep grief.

The incident happened near Westbrook Avenue and West Washington Street shortly after 12:35 a.m. on Sunday. What started as a quiet night ended in violence that no one in the area saw coming.


Police said officers arrived after reports of gunfire and found an adult man with gunshot wounds on the front porch of a home. He was rushed for medical care.

While clearing the residence, officers discovered Rachael Rakes inside the home. She had also been shot and was in critical condition when found.

Emergency responders tried to save her life and transported her to a nearby hospital. Despite those efforts, she was later pronounced dead.

Investigators believe the shooting was targeted. They also say it appears to be an isolated incident, though the motive is still unclear.
