PARKERSBURG SHOOTING CLAIMS YOUNG MAN’S LIFE ON 40TH STREET

Parkersburg, W.Va. — Austin Lamb’s life ended in a burst of gunfire just after midnight on Saturday, leaving his family and neighbors in deep shock. At about 12:10 a.m., police were called to a home on the 1000 block of 40th Street where they found him with multiple gunshot wounds. First responders worked desperately to save him, but Lamb died at the scene.

Friends described Lamb as someone who lit up rooms with his easy smile and steady presence. He was well known in the neighborhood, a familiar face on street corners and at community events. Those who knew him say the loss has left a hole that won’t easily be filled, with many still struggling to understand how a routine night could turn so tragic. People laid flowers, candles, and handwritten notes where he fell, turning the quiet street into a makeshift memorial by Sunday morning.

Police quickly gathered leads and, within minutes, received a tip about a possible suspect. Officers from the Parkersburg Police Department and deputies from the Wood County Sheriff’s Office found 19-year-old Claudia Torres of Clarksburg about a mile from the scene just before 12:20 a.m. She was taken into custody without incident and charged with first-degree murder. Torres now sits in the Wood County Holding Center, awaiting her arraignment in Wood County Magistrate Court.

Investigators have not publicly released a motive, and the police continue to ask anyone with information to come forward. Detectives are combing through evidence and interviewing neighbors and potential witnesses as part of their effort to build a clear picture of what led up to Lamb’s death.

As the community reels from the loss, Lamb’s family is preparing funeral arrangements and urging compassion and calm. “He was more than a victim,” one family member said. “He was a son, a friend, someone who deserved more time. Our hearts are shattered.”

The street where Lamb died, usually quiet in the early hours, has become a place of reflection. Longtime residents speak of looking out for one another more closely now, feeling the fragile line that separates everyday life from sudden heartbreak. Police officials said the case is a priority and pledged to release updates as the investigation unfolds.
