The quiet stretch of Interstate 69 near Gaston turned tragic early Monday morning when a crash claimed the life of 45-year-old Joseph A. Kidwell of Marion and left two others injured.
Deputies with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office said they were called to the scene around 6:30 a.m. after reports of a serious crash near mile-marker 247. When first responders arrived, they found Kidwell suffering from critical injuries along the side of the interstate. Despite emergency efforts, authorities later confirmed he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Kidwell had been traveling with his wife in a 1996 Chevrolet truck when the vehicle became disabled along the interstate. The couple had pulled over to the side of the roadway, a situation that can quickly become dangerous on high-speed highways where traffic moves fast and drivers have little room to react.
According to preliminary findings from deputies, a 2011 Chevrolet truck traveling through the area attempted to pass a tractor-trailer. During that maneuver, the driver reportedly lost control and veered off the roadway. The truck then struck the disabled vehicle where Kidwell and his wife had stopped.
The crash left two additional people injured. Emergency crews transported them to nearby hospitals for treatment, though officials have not publicly released the extent of their injuries.
First responders worked for hours securing the scene and assisting those involved. Traffic along the interstate slowed significantly as emergency personnel investigated the wreck and cleared damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Authorities say incidents involving disabled vehicles on busy interstates can quickly turn deadly. Drivers are often reminded to move over or slow down when approaching vehicles stopped on the shoulder, a simple action that can give stranded motorists a better chance of staying safe.
For family members and friends in Marion, the loss of Joseph A. Kidwell has left a deep mark. As investigators continue piecing together the exact sequence of events, the crash stands as another painful reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn into a life-altering tragedy.
