The town of Joplin is hurting real bad right now. Late Sunday night, a tragic street crash took away Sarah Trayer, a 47-year-old local woman who was just driving through her own neighborhood. Folks around here are completely heartbroken, remembering Sarah as a warm and deeply loved soul who always brought light into the room. She was the kind of person who made this community feel like home, and losing her so suddenly has left a massive, painful void for her family and friends.
Everything went wrong just before 11 p.m. right at the corner of 20th Street and Pearl Avenue. Sarah was driving eastbound, minding her own business on a quiet weekend night, when the unthinkable happened. Out of nowhere, a massive truck barreled through the intersection and smashed right into her car with incredible force. First responders rushed to the scene within minutes, doing absolutely everything they could to save her, but her injuries were just too severe, and she passed away right there.

The whole mess started a bit earlier that night with some kind of silly disturbance between two groups of teenagers over by 26th Street and Maiden Lane. Local investigators say things heated up fast, and the kids took off in their vehicles, chasing each other and driving way too fast for these local roads. A white Ford Raptor truck and another car full of juveniles were basically drag-racing through the city streets, completely ignoring the safety of anyone else on the road.
As the wild chase reached the intersection at 20th Street, the teen driving the heavy Ford Raptor did not even try to slow down. He blew right through a stop sign at a dangerous speed, slamming directly into Sarah’s passing vehicle. Police later confirmed that the kids were flying down the road, and the total failure to stop at the sign was the direct cause of this horrible, avoidable wreck.
By Monday, local authorities tracked down the driver of the truck, a 17-year-old male, and took him into custody. Because of his age, the police turned him straight over to the local juvenile justice officials to face the music. Right now, he is being held behind bars at the Senator Ron Richard Juvenile Center while the legal system figures out the next steps.
The young driver is currently facing serious legal trouble on a petition for involuntary manslaughter. While he sits in the juvenile facility, traffic investigators are still putting together the final pieces of the puzzle to see if anyone else will face charges for the chase. Meanwhile, the people of Joplin are left holding vigils, utterly stunned that a senseless teenage beef could cost an innocent woman her life.
