Investigators are working to determine what led to a deadly Sunday morning crash near Columbiana Centre that claimed the life of a 27-year-old Columbia bicyclist in one of the Midlands’ busiest shopping corridors.
The victim was identified as Standly Stampson, according to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office. Officials said the deadly collision happened around 10:40 a.m. near the parking lot area along Columbiana Circle in the Harbison district.

Authorities said Stampson was riding a bicycle south through the shopping center parking lot when he collided with a vehicle traveling west on Columbiana Circle. The crash happened in broad daylight near a heavily traveled retail and dining area known for constant vehicle movement during weekends.
First responders arrived quickly and transported Stampson to a local hospital for emergency treatment. Despite efforts to save him, he later died from his injuries. Officials confirmed he was not wearing a helmet during the crash.
Police said the driver involved did not leave the scene and remained there as investigators began processing evidence and speaking with witnesses. No arrests or charges have been announced, and investigators have not said whether speed, visibility, distraction, or other factors may have contributed to the collision.
The scene drew attention from shoppers and nearby drivers as police blocked portions of the area during the investigation. Many people in the Harbison district are familiar with the constant mix of cars, pedestrians, and cyclists moving through the shopping center roads every day.
Columbiana Centre remains one of the largest and busiest retail destinations in the Columbia area, attracting heavy traffic from Lexington and Richland counties. Because of the constant flow of vehicles around restaurants, stores, and parking lots, even a brief moment of confusion can quickly become dangerous.
Officials from the Columbia Police Department and the coroner’s office continue to investigate the crash. Authorities are expected to examine surveillance footage and reconstruct the moments leading up to the deadly impact.
The loss of Standly Stampson now becomes another painful entry in South Carolina’s rising traffic death count this year. Community members are once again being reminded of the dangers that can exist even in familiar places visited every day by thousands of people.
