SUMTER COUNTY, Fla. — A quiet Friday morning turned tragic on Interstate 75 when a 27-year-old Inverness man lost his life in a crash that sent his car plunging from an overpass onto the busy interstate below.
Just after 10 a.m. on Friday, February 6, authorities say a Honda Accord driven by Alex L. Anderson was traveling on County Road 462 over the southbound lanes when it suddenly veered off the roadway. For reasons still under investigation, the car went over the edge and landed in the path of an oncoming Volvo SUV.

The impact with the Volvo was severe. Anderson, 27, was killed at the scene. The driver of the Volvo, a 61-year-old man from Georgia, suffered only minor injuries and was treated at a nearby hospital before being released.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers are combing through the evidence to figure out what caused the Honda to leave the overpass. Road conditions, vehicle performance, and possible medical issues are all being examined, and at this point there is no sign of impairment or criminal activity.
The crash led to a shutdown of the southbound lanes of I-75 near mile marker 331 and the closure of the County Road 462 overpass as first responders secured the scene. Drivers heading south were rerouted, and congestion stretched back for miles. Traffic slowly reopened later in the afternoon once the wreckage was cleared.
Family and friends describe Anderson as a warm, hardworking young man who was loved by those who knew him, and his loss has rippled through the Inverness and Sumter County communities. Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen the crash or has information that could help the investigation to contact the Florida Highway Patrol.
This tragic accident is a grim reminder of how quickly life can change on Florida’s highways. Continued investigations aim to bring clarity to what happened and help prevent another family from facing such heartbreak on these busy roadways.
