A fun afternoon on the water turned into a total nightmare for a group of friends this week. A local young man lost his life in a sad boating accident that shocked the community.
Anderson Teixeira Goncalves was only 20 years old. He lived in Taunton and was just trying to enjoy a beautiful summer day outside.
Everything went wrong around mid-afternoon on Thursday. Anderson and his buddies were out on Ames Pond paddling around in a canoe.
Suddenly, the small boat tipped completely over. Everyone ended up in the water, but Anderson never came back up to the surface.
His terrified friends scrambled to get help as fast as they could. Police officers and firefighters rushed to the scene off Highland Street right around 2:30 p.m.
A massive search team quickly got to work on the water. It took the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team about 90 minutes to finally locate Anderson.
Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital by ambulance, but it was simply too late. Officials are still looking into the accident, but they do not suspect any foul play.
