SURPRISE, Arizona — The tight‑knit Surprise community is shaken after the sudden and tragic death of 30‑year‑old Rudy Gaitan. He died late Thursday night after being struck by a car during a foot pursuit with police, authorities confirmed.
It all began just after 10:30 p.m. Thursday when Surprise Police responded to a reported domestic violence incident near the intersection of Reems Road and Waddell Road. Officers were told a male suspect had fled on foot and might have been armed.

An officer soon located a man matching the description nearby. When the officer ordered him to stop, the suspect ran. What followed was a tense foot chase down Reems Road.
In a devastating turn, both the officer and the fleeing man were struck by a passing vehicle during the pursuit. Emergency crews rushed them to a hospital. The officer, who was treated for injuries, was released. Gaitan, however, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Police have identified the man who died as Rudy Gaitan of Surprise. Officials say the driver who hit them remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.
The Peoria Police Department is leading the ongoing investigation as part of the West Valley Investigative Response Team, and has not yet released body‑camera footage from the incident.
Friends and neighbors are left grieving the sudden loss. Those who knew Gaitan describe him as someone who brought laughter and light into the lives of the people around him. His passing has cast a quiet shadow over the neighborhood, reminding everyone of how quickly life can change.
Surprise residents and loved ones continue to seek answers and comfort even as the official inquiry unfolds. In the days ahead, the community hopes for healing as they remember Gaitan not for how he died but for who he was.
