Traffic moved through one of Odessa’s busiest intersections Friday night when a routine ride turned into a frightening scene for 65-year-old motorcyclist Fred Giles. Just before 9 p.m., Giles was riding his black Harley-Davidson north along Andrews Highway when a sudden turn by another vehicle changed everything.
Police say the crash happened around 8:49 p.m. at the intersection of Andrews Highway and University Boulevard. Investigators believe a blue Honda Civic traveling south on Andrews Highway attempted to turn left onto University Boulevard. The driver, identified as 53-year-old Javier Valenzuela Diaz, reportedly failed to yield to the oncoming motorcycle.

The Honda Civic collided with Giles’ motorcycle in the intersection. The impact left the longtime rider seriously hurt and lying in the roadway as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Paramedics quickly transported Giles to Medical Center Hospital with severe injuries. Officials have not yet released an update on his medical condition, leaving friends and community members hoping for positive news in the days ahead.
Authorities say the situation became even more troubling when the driver of the Civic allegedly left the scene instead of stopping to help. According to investigators, Diaz fled without rendering aid to the injured rider. Police later released a photograph of Diaz taken in 2023 while asking the public for help locating him.
Under Texas law, leaving the scene of a crash that causes serious bodily injury is considered a felony offense. A conviction can lead to two to ten years behind bars and fines that may reach $10,000.
The crash occurred near Odessa College, a part of the city known for heavy traffic throughout the day and evening. Andrews Highway is a major north-south route cutting through Odessa, while University Boulevard links several academic and commercial areas. The intersection regularly sees steady vehicle flow from students, shoppers, and commuters.
Odessa police say the investigation is still ongoing. Officers continue searching for Diaz, who is believed to have connections both in Odessa and in Florida, while asking anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.
