The quiet neighborhood streets of Wantagh, New York turned tragic on Monday evening when Elena Crowley, a 53-year-old retired New York City police officer, was struck and killed by a pickup truck while crossing an intersection near her home. Authorities say the fatal crash happened around 5:22 p.m. on March 9 at the intersection of Lufberry Avenue and Briard Street. Crowley, a resident of Wantagh, was crossing the residential roadway when a pickup truck moving west on Lufberry Avenue turned south onto Briard Street. During the turn, the vehicle struck her.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and transported Crowley to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, she was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. Police later confirmed that she had suffered fatal injuries in the collision.
Investigators said the vehicle involved was a 2025 GMC pickup driven by a 57-year-old man. Officials noted that the driver stayed at the scene following the crash and cooperated with officers as they began reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
