COUNCIL BLUFFS FATHER STABBED IN HOME INVASION SAYS KIDS SAVED HIS LIFE

Council Bluffs, Iowa — Chad Opal thought he was doing a simple check around his property two days before Christmas. What happened instead has left a family shaken, a community rallying, and a father grateful to be alive. Shortly after returning home on December 23 from visiting his partner in the hospital, Opal noticed something unusual in a vacant house next door. When he went to investigate, he was met with danger no parent should ever face.

A stranger was inside the empty house. Opal confronted him, and within moments the situation turned violent. The man stabbed Opal multiple times — in the head, through his mouth into his jaw, in his chest near his heart, and in his thigh near a major artery. Opal says he felt himself fighting for his life right there on his front porch.

Inside the house, Opal’s 10‑year‑old daughter, Autumn, watched in terror but stayed calm long enough to call 911 and describe what was happening. Hearing his father in danger, Opal’s 16‑year‑old son ran outside and together they tackled the attacker. For about ten minutes they held him down until police could arrive.

Opal said that without his children’s quick actions he believes he would not be here. The family has since been dealing with the physical and emotional aftermath of the attack. Opal remains off work while he recovers, and his children are receiving therapy to cope with what they witnessed that day.

Police identified the suspect as 41‑year‑old Antonio Marquez North of Omaha. He was arrested and charged with attempted murder and other felonies. Opal and his family have been told the case is moving toward trial, but the uncertainty hangs over them as they work to rebuild a sense of safety in their own home.

The standoff that should have been a routine check has changed this family forever. Neighbors, friends, and strangers have shared support, and a crowdfunding effort was started to help with medical bills, lost income, and therapy costs. For Opal, the recovery is just beginning, but he keeps pointing back to the courage his children showed — the quick thinking and bravery that kept him alive.
