Nobody expects a Sunday morning to end in tragedy. But for Ivan Carrillo, a 30-year-old from Pasadena, Texas, the early hours of that day turned into something nobody in his family will ever forget. Around 3:50 in the morning, while most folks were still sound asleep, Carrillo was behind the wheel of his 2020 Ram 1500 on Interstate 20 — and then, in what must have been a terrifying matter of seconds, everything went wrong.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Carrillo’s pickup truck was traveling eastbound when it crossed into the center median. The truck overturned, and in a heartbeat, it slammed into a westbound 2026 Freightliner semi-truck moving at highway speed in the opposite direction. The impact was devastating. A 2025 Ford F-250 also got caught up in the chaos, taking damage after it struck debris scattered across the roadway from the collision. When first responders arrived at the scene near mile marker 168, there was nothing they could do. Ivan Carrillo was pronounced dead at the scene.

What makes this story hit even harder is the little girl he left behind. Somewhere out there, Ivan Carrillo’s daughter woke up that Sunday without her dad. Friends and loved ones have since launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral costs and support the needs of his child — a quiet but powerful reminder that behind every crash statistic is a real human being with a life, a family, and people who loved him deeply.
Carrillo was only 30 years old. Thirty. That’s a young man with plenty of road still ahead of him — or at least, that’s what it should have been. His community back in Pasadena is now rallying together to make sure his daughter and family aren’t left to carry this burden alone, and that says a whole lot about the kind of person Ivan must have been.
Investigators with DPS have not yet confirmed what caused the Ram 1500 to drift out of its lane and into the median. Whether it was fatigue, a medical episode, a blown tire, or something else entirely — that answer hasn’t come yet. The crash remains under active investigation, and authorities are still piecing together the full picture of what happened in those dark early morning hours on I-20.
The semi-truck driver and the occupants of the Ford F-250 were not reported to have suffered injuries, which, under the circumstances, is something of a miracle. A three-vehicle wreck at nearly 4 in the morning on a major interstate, and only one person lost — Ivan Carrillo — but the absence of additional casualties doesn’t soften the blow of his loss one bit.
For now, his family is doing what grieving families do: leaning on each other, accepting help from their community, and trying to figure out how to move forward after losing someone far too soon. If you’ve ever lost somebody unexpectedly, you know there’s no roadmap for that kind of pain. Ivan Carrillo deserved more time. His daughter deserved more time with her father. And that’s the part of this story that sticks with you long after you’ve stopped reading.
