The quiet stretch of road at 6 Mile and Kinloch in Redford Township turned tragic Sunday night when 15-year-old Dylan Burkett lost his life in a crash that has shaken family, friends, and neighbors across the community.
Police say the crash happened around 8 p.m. as Dylan sat on an ATV in the roadway at the busy intersection. At that moment, a vehicle traveling westbound along 6 Mile Road struck the ATV. The impact was severe, and the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators say Dylan was not wearing a helmet when the collision happened. The driver of the vehicle stopped immediately and remained at the scene while officers began their investigation. Authorities say the driver has been cooperating fully with police.
Officials noted that alcohol and excessive speed do not appear to have played a role in the crash. Even so, the incident shut down the roadway for hours Sunday night as investigators worked carefully through the scene, documenting evidence and piecing together exactly what happened in the moments before the collision.
Under Michigan law, ATVs are not allowed on public roads, and riders who are 15 years old are only permitted to cross a street or highway if they are under the direct visual supervision of an adult. Investigators say that requirement was not met in this case.
For Dylan’s family, the tragedy carries an especially painful weight. His father, James Burkett, said he had argued with his son earlier that day about wearing a helmet while riding. Dylan preferred to ride with headphones, something that made it difficult for him to wear the protective gear his father insisted on.
The conversation stayed with his father long after the crash. Just minutes before Dylan left the house, James told his son the reason for his warnings was simple — love and fear for his safety.
Friends and relatives describe Dylan as a tough, energetic teenager who loved fishing, riding ATVs, and spending time outdoors. Originally from south Georgia, he was known among family as the kind of kid who stepped up to help care for his ailing grandfather. He was also deeply devoted to his girlfriend, often showing off the notes she wrote him with the excitement only a teenager can carry.
The crash came just two days after Dylan celebrated his 15th birthday, a detail that has made the loss even harder for those who knew him.
Police say the investigation remains active as officers continue reviewing evidence and speaking with witnesses. Anyone who may have seen the crash or has information about what happened is being asked to contact the Redford Police Traffic Bureau.
In the meantime, loved ones have started a fundraiser to help cover funeral and memorial costs, as the community rallies around a grieving family now forced to navigate life without the teenager many describe as full of energy, loyalty, and heart.
