Orlando has been shaken by the death of 33-year-old Julien Emmanuel Cruz, who was shot and killed early Sunday morning after what police say began as a verbal argument with another man along North Orange Avenue. The incident erupted just after 2:30 a.m. near the busy nightclub area, where people had been out enjoying the night before the loss of life that has left many in the city stunned and grieving.
Police say officers were called to the 1900 block of North Orange Avenue in downtown Orlando shortly after reports of gunfire. When they arrived, they found Cruz with a gunshot wound and rushed him to a nearby hospital. He later died from his injuries, leaving family, friends, and community members struggling to understand how a night out went so terribly wrong.

Investigators have said Cruz and 37-year-old Jean Gabriel Borja Gil De La Madr were engaged in a heated exchange on the sidewalk before things turned violent. At some point in that confrontation, detectives say De La Madr went to his vehicle, grabbed a firearm, and shot Cruz before fleeing the scene in his car. Police later found the vehicle a short distance away and arrested De La Madr, charging him with second-degree murder with a firearm.
Those close to Cruz describe him as a warm, kind person who loved life and had deep connections with people in Orlando’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community. His father has spoken publicly about the heartbreak of losing his son, recalling that Cruz and his partner had been out enjoying their evening together before the dispute that turned deadly. A shirt with a bullet hole has become a painful symbol of a life cut short and the unanswerable questions left behind.
Though the shooting happened off the nightclub’s property, the owner of a nearby club said the grief has rippled through the local LGBTQ+ scene, touching many who knew Cruz and many more who only knew of him. A small memorial has grown at the scene where friends and neighbors leave flowers and candles in his memory, a quiet testament to a life that mattered deeply to many.
Police continue to investigate, and while De La Madr faces charges, some family members believe others may have been involved in the moments that led to the shooting. Authorities have not publicly confirmed whether additional suspects are being pursued but say the case remains under active investigation.
In the wake of this tragic event, Orlando mourns not only a life lost but the sense of safety felt on a night out. The city and its residents are left to reckon with how quickly joy turned to grief, and how deeply the loss of Julien Cruz has touched the hearts of those around him.
