Enid: Kendra Diane Smith, Beloved First-Grade Teacher, Killed in Suspected Murder-Suicide

The quiet Oklahoma city of Enid woke up to heartbreak this week after a beloved elementary school teacher, Kendra Diane Smith, was shot and killed in what police say appears to be a murder-suicide involving her estranged husband.

Officers were called around 7:50 p.m. Wednesday to reports of gunfire near 23rd Street and Cedar Avenue. When they arrived, they found 53-year-old Kendra Diane Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Neighbors had reported hearing the shots just moments earlier. Emergency responders rushed Smith to a nearby hospital, but doctors were unable to save her.

Smith spent her days inside a first-grade classroom at Coolidge Elementary School, where students knew her as the kind of teacher who poured her heart into every child who walked through the door. Parents and colleagues described her as warm, patient, and deeply devoted to her students.

School leaders said the loss has shaken the entire district. Enid Public Schools called Smith’s death a devastating blow and quickly arranged for counselors to support students and staff struggling with the sudden tragedy. Many children returned to school the next day without the teacher who had greeted them with a smile each morning.

Investigators say the gunman was Smith’s estranged husband, 56-year-old Jeffrey Len Smith of Oklahoma City. Authorities believe he shot her Wednesday evening before leaving the scene.
Police later tracked him to a Love’s Travel Stop on East Randolph Avenue, miles away from the shooting site. Officers found him inside his vehicle with what authorities say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The tragedy has left a deep mark on the Enid community, especially among the families of young students who spent their days in Smith’s classroom. Parents say she treated every child as if they were her own and made a lasting difference in their lives.

Smith leaves behind three children and two grandchildren, along with countless students who will remember the teacher who helped guide their first steps in school.

In the days since the shooting, the community has begun rallying around her family, offering support and remembering a woman whose life was centered on teaching, kindness, and the small everyday moments that shape young lives.
