Cockeysville Tragedy: Ryan Duvall Dies in Late-Night Crash at Poplar Hill Intersection

The night was quiet in Cockeysville until it wasn’t. Around 9:45 p.m. on May 1, a single car veered off Poplar Hill Road near the Merrymans Mill intersection, slamming into a tree and ending the life of 18-year-old Ryan Duvall. By the time emergency crews arrived, the scene had already turned heartbreaking.

Police say the car was heading southbound when it suddenly left the roadway. There’s still no clear answer as to why. Investigators are working through the details, trying to piece together what caused the vehicle to lose control in that moment.

Ryan Duvall, who was riding as a passenger, was pronounced dead right there at the scene. He was just 18. The kind of age where life is supposed to be opening up, not closing down. Friends and family are now left holding onto memories that ended far too soon.

Three other young people were inside the vehicle. All of them were hurt. The driver, a juvenile, and another passenger suffered life-threatening injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital. A third juvenile passenger was also taken in, though their injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

In the days since the crash, grief has spread through the community. A GoFundMe campaign was set up by Ryan’s brother, Jamie, aiming to ease the burden on their parents. The goal is simple but heavy—help cover funeral costs and give their mother space to step away from work and mourn.

For many, the hardest part is the unanswered questions. Police have not said what led the car off the road, and no final determination has been made. Until then, the silence around the cause only deepens the weight of the loss.

What remains certain is this: a young life is gone, a family is grieving, and a quiet stretch of road in Cockeysville now carries a story that won’t be forgotten anytime soon.
