What started as a routine drive through a quiet stretch of northeastern Ohio turned into a devastating scene Thursday evening after a violent crash at the intersection of State Route 307 and Windsor-Mechanicsville Road claimed the life of Robert King and seriously injured another passenger.
According to investigators with the Ohio State Highway Patrol, King was behind the wheel of a 2017 Ford Transit traveling northbound on Windsor-Mechanicsville Road when the vehicle failed to stop at the intersection with Route 307. Troopers said the Ford then entered the intersection directly into the path of a 2018 Toyota Tacoma moving along the state route.

The collision was so severe that the Toyota Tacoma overturned after impact and traveled off the north side of the roadway. Authorities said the force of the crash also pushed King’s Ford Transit off the roadway, where it slammed into two parked vehicles nearby.
Emergency crews rushed to the crash scene, but officials said Robert King was pronounced dead there at the intersection before he could be transported for treatment. The sudden loss left the rural Ashtabula County community shaken as flashing lights filled the roadway for hours.
Investigators said a passenger riding in King’s vehicle suffered life-threatening injuries. The victim was first taken to UH Geneva Medical Center before being airlifted to UH Cleveland Medical Center for further emergency care due to the seriousness of the injuries.
Meanwhile, the driver of the Toyota Tacoma survived the crash with non-life-threatening injuries and was also transported to UH Geneva Medical Center for treatment. Authorities have not released the identities of the injured victims.
Throughout Thursday evening, the intersection remained crowded with investigators, fire crews, deputies, and emergency responders working to document evidence and clear the wreckage. Drivers in the area experienced traffic delays while crews removed damaged vehicles from the roadway.
Troopers said the Ohio State Highway Patrol received assistance from the Ashtabula County Sheriff’s Office, Geneva Fire Department, Austinburg Fire Department, and Northwest Ambulance District during the emergency response.
The crash happened in a largely rural section of Ashtabula County surrounded by farmland, residential roads, and small community routes often traveled by local drivers. State Route 307 serves as a major east-west corridor connecting several communities throughout the region.
At this stage of the investigation, authorities have not said whether speed, impairment, distraction, or road conditions played any role in the deadly collision. The Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed the investigation remains ongoing as officials continue working to determine exactly what led to the tragic crash.
