Gulf Freeway tragedy: 5-year-old girl dies in high-speed wreck

The Gulf Freeway turned into a scene of absolute heartbreak Thursday evening. A 5-year-old girl lost her life after a violent crash near FM 2351. She was just a little girl sitting in the front seat when everything went wrong. Police say the car she was in slammed into another vehicle because the driver was going way too fast.

It is a tough pill to swallow for the Houston community. Investigators found that the little girl was not even in a child safety seat. When the cars collided in the 16700 block, the impact was simply too much for her small body. Emergency responders rushed her to the hospital, but doctors could not save her. She was pronounced dead shortly after arriving.

The people in the other car involved walked away without any injuries. But for the family of this young girl, life will never be the same. The loss of a child is a weight no one should have to carry. It is especially painful knowing that a simple car seat might have changed the outcome.

The man behind the wheel was 60-year-old Daniel Ruiz. Court records show he was driving at an unsafe speed and failed to control the vehicle. Because of his actions, he is now facing a felony manslaughter charge. A judge has already denied his bond, meaning he is staying behind bars for now.

This is not the first time Ruiz has been in trouble for putting a child in danger. Just back in December 2024, deputies caught him leaving a 4-year-old alone in a hot car. He was busy gambling inside the Sam Houston Race Park for over four hours while the child sat in a vehicle that wasn’t even running.

Back then, he got off with four years of probation for child abandonment. He was supposed to be supervised and learn his lesson. Now, just months later, another child who was supposed to be in his care is gone forever. It is a haunting pattern of neglect that ended in the worst way possible.

Houston police are still digging into the details of the crash. They want to make sure every piece of evidence is accounted for. As the investigation continues, a local family is left grieving a sweet girl whose life was cut incredibly short on a busy Texas highway.
