Highway 26 Crash in Clackamas County Leaves Austin Buchholtz Dead, Three Hospitalized

Clackamas County, Oregon — A head‑on crash Saturday evening on Highway 26 east of Sandy ended in tragedy, leaving one young man dead and three others seriously injured, according to state police reports and multiple local news outlets.

The collision happened around 5:45 p.m. near milepost 31 when a Nissan Frontier driven by 35‑year‑old Heath Eugene Beardmore of Rhododendron crossed the center line and struck a westbound Honda Accord driven by 19‑year‑old Kailee Joy Peterson of Gresham. The impact was immediate and violent. Beardmore, Peterson, and a passenger in Peterson’s car were rushed to a local hospital with serious injuries. A second passenger, 24‑year‑old Austin Rylee Buchholtz of Corbett, was killed at the scene.

Those who knew Austin describe him as someone who lit up a room with his easy smile and welcoming nature. His family says he cherished time with loved ones above all else, whether at holiday gatherings or small everyday moments. Peers remember him as humorous and warm, someone who built friendships effortlessly and cared deeply for the people closest to him.

Austin’s loss has hit his community hard. Neighbors and classmates have shared memories of his kindness and the bright future many believed lay ahead. Though just 24, he had goals and hopes that friends say were cut far too short on that stretch of Highway 26.

Local emergency crews, including fire and rescue teams from Clackamas and Hoodland as well as the Oregon Department of Transportation, worked the scene for hours to clear the wreckage and investigate the cause. Traffic was halted for roughly five hours while state police collected evidence and reconstruction data. At this stage, troopers say the exact reason the Nissan crossed into oncoming traffic remains under investigation.

For Beardmore, Peterson, and the other injured passenger, the road to recovery is expected to be long and uncertain. Families are focused on hospital updates and are asking for privacy as they support their loved ones through treatment and rehabilitation.

The Corbett and Sandy communities are now gathering to support Austin’s family, sharing stories of his impact and offering comfort to those grieving. In the days ahead, many will recall his laughter, the moments he shared with friends, and the genuine care he showed others — reminders of a life that, though tragically brief, was deeply felt by those who knew him.
