Putnam Township, Michigan — A 28‑year‑old Lansing man died Thursday after a high‑speed police pursuit ended in a violent crash that shook families and neighbors.
Shortly before noon, a Livingston County sheriff’s deputy spotted a stolen 2024 Range Rover on Interstate 96 near Mason Road. The vehicle had been reported stolen out of East Lansing days earlier, and the deputy attempted a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over, the SUV sped away, racing southbound on D‑19 at speeds that witnesses later described as terrifying.
At the intersection of D‑19 and Swarthout Road, the stolen SUV tried to pass a pickup turning left. It slammed into the front of a 2023 Ford F‑350 and then careened into a parked Ford F‑450 on the shoulder. The force of that impact was enough to seriously injure both men inside the stolen vehicle, a tragic ending to a moment that likely lasted no more than seconds.
Emergency crews rushed the driver and his 23‑year‑old passenger to the University of Michigan Hospital. The passenger remains in critical condition, but the driver, identified by loved ones as Gmo Person, was later pronounced dead. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
People in and around Putnam Township said the blast of sirens and the chaotic scene that followed left them shaken.
