MOBILE, Alabama residents were shaken early Monday when 21-year-old Carlos Funez was killed in a traffic accident on Old Shell Road. The crash happened just before sunrise at around 3:15 a.m. near the intersection of Old Shell Road and Cosgrove Drive.
Police say Funez had pulled over in the westbound lanes and was standing outside his vehicle. His hazard lights were on, but before he could get help, another westbound vehicle struck him. Officers found him in the road and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle stayed and cooperated with police. Investigators have not yet announced any charges or specific causes. The Mobile Police Department is still working to piece together exactly what happened in the moments before the impact.
Family and friends describe Funez as a young man with his whole life ahead of him. He was only 21 and had been out that morning when the tragedy occurred. The news of his death spread quickly through the community, bringing an outpouring of grief from those who knew him.
Traffic was temporarily backed up on Old Shell Road while detectives examined the scene and interviewed witnesses. Crews worked carefully to make sure every detail was recorded before reopening the lanes.
