Jakiya Smith was driving her SUV south on Highway 25 around 7:30 p.m. She was less than a single mile away from her house when things went wrong. For some unknown reason, her vehicle suddenly veered off the road.
The SUV slammed directly into a tree just south of the Monroe County Airport. First responders rushed to the scene to try and save her. They took her to the nearest local hospital in Amory first.
Her injuries were just too severe for the local team to handle. Doctors quickly transferred her to a larger medical center up in Tupelo. Sadly, she passed away from her injuries after arriving at the second hospital.
Jakiya was not traveling alone on that dark highway. Her three young children were riding in the SUV with her when the vehicle hit the tree. The entire community is reeling from the sudden loss of this young mom.
