Walker, Louisiana — The City of Walker is grieving the sudden death of Fire Chief Russell “Rusty” Shoultz, who passed away early Friday morning after a medical emergency.
Officials said Walker police and fire crews responded quickly when the emergency was reported. He was later pronounced dead. No additional details were released out of respect for his family and the first responders on scene.
Shoultz had only been serving as fire chief since July 1 of last year, but city leaders say his impact came fast and felt deeply across the department and the community.
Mayor Gary Carey described him as a man who led with purpose and always put people first. He said Shoultz worked hard every day to build trust between the fire department and the people it serves.

Before coming to Walker, Shoultz built a long career in public safety that stretched more than 30 years. He worked in fire service, emergency response, and law enforcement roles. He also served as chief of special operations for the St. George Fire Protection District in Louisiana.
City officials say he quickly focused on training, readiness, and improving how the department operated. His approach was practical and direct. He pushed for better preparation and stronger teamwork.
Beyond operations, he was known for being present in the community. He supported public safety education efforts and worked closely with residents in outreach programs.
Mayor Carey said messages of sympathy have been coming in from fire departments and agencies across the country. He said that response reflects how widely respected Shoultz was in his field.
Walker officials have arranged support for firefighters and police officers as they deal with the loss. Neighboring agencies are helping with coverage so local personnel can take time to grieve.
A memorial is planned at Fire Station 1. A public service will be announced later. City leaders are asking for privacy for the family as the community processes the loss of a chief, mentor, and friend.
