Carlos Helm, Louisiana: Mysterious center-line crossover ends in an early morning double tragedy.

Carlos Helm was driving north through the early morning dark on Thursday. The 49-year-old Mansfield resident was behind the wheel of his 2020 Chevrolet Traverse. It was around 5:20 a.m., and the stretch of Louisiana Highway 175 near Scott Road was quiet.

Everything changed in a split second. For reasons that still have investigators scratching their heads, Carlos’s SUV drifted out of its lane. It rolled right past the yellow paint of the center line.

An oncoming vehicle was heading straight toward him. A 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling south in the opposite lane. The two heavy vehicles slammed into each other head-on with incredible force.

The metal twisted and crunching sounds echoed through the morning air. Both SUVs suffered massive, heavy damage from the sheer violence of the impact. It was a devastating scene for the first responders who arrived minutes later.

Carlos had his seat belt clicked in securely, just like he was supposed to. But the safety device could not save him from the severe force of the wreck. Emergency workers pronounced him dead right at the scene.

The driver of the other vehicle also lost his life in the crash. His name was Alonzo Thompkins, a 39-year-old guy from Arlington, Texas. Just like Carlos, Alonzo was wearing his seat belt, but his injuries were also fatal.

Louisiana State Police Troop G handled the heartbreaking scene. They quickly noted that alcohol or drugs did not look like a factor in the crash. Still, troopers took standard toxicology samples from Carlos to be completely sure.

Now, a local family is grieving the loss of Carlos. Investigators are still working hard to figure out what caused his SUV to cross that line. Authorities are reminding everyone to stay alert and avoid distractions on the road.
