A late-night police pursuit on Route 1 in Woodbridge ended in tragedy when a speeding Nissan Maxima crashed into another vehicle, killing 17-year-old passenger Karla M. Gamero and leaving several others seriously injured.
According to authorities, a Woodbridge police officer noticed the sedan traveling southbound at high speed just before midnight on Feb. 19. The officer began pursuing the vehicle. About a minute into the chase, the Nissan collided with a civilian car at the intersection of Route 1 and Gill Lane. The pursuing police vehicle did not make contact with either car.
Inside the Nissan was Gamero, a junior at Edison High School. She was pronounced dead at 12:25 a.m. on Feb. 20. Her passing was later confirmed by her family and detailed in her obituary. A dog traveling in the same vehicle also died from the crash.
The driver of the Nissan survived but suffered serious injuries. Other occupants from both vehicles were also badly hurt. All were transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital. Authorities have not released the names of the drivers, nor have they announced any charges as of now.
Because the fatal crash occurred during a police pursuit, the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has taken over the investigation. That review will examine the circumstances of the chase and the moments leading up to the collision.
Route 1 southbound remained closed for nearly half a day while investigators processed the scene. The closure caused significant traffic delays through Woodbridge as officials reconstructed what happened in those brief but critical seconds.
Meanwhile, the loss of Gamero has deeply affected her school and community. Friends remember her as warm and ambitious. A GoFundMe established for her family has raised over $14,000, reflecting the outpouring of support from those who knew her and those moved by her story. As investigators continue their work, the crash has left behind questions, grief, and a community searching for answers.
