Summerville, South Carolina: A quiet night turns tragic after 17-year-old Ma’Davion N. Smalls was shot and killed in a case that has left a deep wound across the community.
It happened Thursday evening after reports of a disturbance involving a vehicle near Midland Parkway. When officers arrived, they found Ma’Davion in the backseat of a car suffering from a gunshot wound. Emergency crews rushed to help, but he was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:37 p.m.

Investigators say the shooting began earlier at John McKissick Stadium before the situation moved to the Midland Parkway area. The vehicle connected to the incident was later stopped by police during a traffic stop, where Ma’Davion was discovered inside.
Authorities confirmed that a juvenile suspect was taken into custody. During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted to having a 9mm handgun while seated in the driver’s seat and firing into the backseat where Ma’Davion was sitting. A passenger in the front seat also supported parts of that account.
The suspect now faces a murder charge and has been denied bond. Additional charges include weapons-related offenses tied to the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.
As news spread, Summerville was shaken. Friends and neighbors described a young life cut short, someone who was just beginning to find his place in the world. The loss of a 17-year-old has left many struggling to understand how things escalated so quickly.
Police say the investigation is still active as they continue piecing together what happened in the moments leading up to the shooting. Other agencies are also assisting in the effort to clarify the full sequence of events.
