Blodgett, Texas — Jeff Derrick Dies Battling Fast-Moving Grass Fire

The grass was dry. The wind would not sit still. And by Friday afternoon, a routine emergency had turned into a nightmare for a small East Texas fire crew.

Firefighter Jeff Derrick died while responding to a rapidly spreading grass fire in the 1400 block of FM 21. He had been working the fire line with fellow volunteers when conditions shifted. Smoke thickened. Visibility dropped. The fire moved faster than expected.

According to the Tri-Lakes Voluntary Fire Department, Derrick became disoriented as he tried to make his way back to his vehicle. He was overtaken by smoke while attempting to escape the advancing flames. Firefighters rushed to reach him, but despite their efforts, he could not be saved.

Crews from Tri-Lakes had rolled out with two brush trucks and a tanker. Firefighters from Mount Pleasant backed them up with two additional brush trucks and command support. Together, they fought to contain a blaze that had already pushed into a nearby pasture.

The fire was fueled by tall, brittle grass. High winds and shifting weather conditions made it unpredictable. Flames jumped lines. Smoke hung low. What began as a grass fire quickly became a dangerous and unstable scene.

Derrick was known as the kind of firefighter who showed up without hesitation. He volunteered his time to protect neighbors, ranch land, and open fields that stretch across Titus County. Those who served beside him say he worked with steady focus and quiet courage.

Now the department and the wider community are grieving. Fellow firefighters are mourning one of their own. Friends remember his willingness to step forward when others stepped back. His death has left a deep mark on a department built on service and sacrifice.

In a rural town where sirens cut through open air and neighbors know each other by name, the loss feels personal. Derrick’s final call was one of duty. His legacy is written in smoke, courage, and the lives he worked to protect.
