AMITE, Louisiana: Beloved Local Man Dies After Amtrak Hits Pickup Truck

Amite, Louisiana, is reeling from a sudden, heartbreaking loss after a pickup truck collided with a southbound Amtrak train on Wednesday afternoon, leaving 23‑year‑old Dorian Batiste dead and two others hurt. The crash happened just after 2:40 p.m. at the rural intersection of Louisiana Highway 51 and Ponders Quarters Lane, a place locals know all too well for its lack of safety barriers at the railway crossing.

According to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s deputies, the truck Batiste was riding in crossed the Canadian National rail line when the train struck it. Batiste was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The truck’s driver was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries officials described as non‑life‑threatening and was later released. A passenger from the train was also hospitalized after suffering what authorities called a panic attack, but that person has since been treated and released.

Friends and family gathered near the crash site in shock, describing Dorian as a young man full of life, always quick with a laugh and eager to help others. His cousin said he was on his way home from work when the accident happened, and relatives have expressed deep frustration that the crossing lacks flashing lights or gates to warn of oncoming trains.

Neighbors pointed out that this stretch of track has been the scene of other close calls, and they’ve long pushed for improved safety measures. At this particular crossing, only signs telling drivers to stop or yield are present, and that leaves many residents feeling uneasy about crossing when trains are near.

The Amtrak line involved runs from Chicago to New Orleans and was delayed at the scene for more than two hours as crews worked to clear the wreckage and reopen Highway 51. Officials said the train carried about 149 passengers at the time, most of whom were unharmed.

Sheriff’s investigators continue to look into exactly what led to the collision, including whether the truck may have had brake trouble as it turned onto Ponders Quarters Lane. In the meantime, law‑enforcement officials are urging drivers to stop, look and listen at railroad crossings and to never try to beat a train across the tracks.

Dorian’s sudden death has left a quiet rural community grieving, with many talking about his generous spirit and quick smile. Those who knew him say he will be missed dearly.
