Live In Lodge Motel Tragedy: 17‑Year‑Old Sheldon Lewis Killed by Stray Bullet in Gwinnett County

Gwinnett County, Ga. — A quiet family night turned into heartbreak when 17‑year‑old Sheldon Lewis was killed late Thursday night after a bullet suddenly pierced the thin wall of the motel room where he was sitting and playing video games.

It was about 11 p.m. at the Live In Lodge Extended Stay on Stone Mountain Highway when police say the unthinkable happened. Lewis was inside Room 216 with family members when the round tore through the shared wall and struck him. By the time officers arrived, he was already gone.

Authorities quickly tracked the shot to the room next door — Room 225 — where 31‑year‑old Shemarcus Cockran of Lilburn told detectives he had just returned from a gun range and was cleaning his firearm. Police say the gun discharged accidentally, sending a bullet straight through the wall and into Lewis’s room.

Cockran was arrested at the scene and now faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. He is being held in custody as the case moves toward its first court hearing.

People staying at the extended stay were shaken. One neighbor told reporters that folks were “just playing a video game, and a bullet just come through the wall.” It was a reminder of how thin the line can be between normal life and sudden loss.

Lewis was a junior at Parkview High School, and his family is now left to cope with shock and grief. Loved ones have set up a fundraiser to help with funeral and relocation costs, describing Sheldon as a beloved son and brother whose life ended in a moment no one saw coming.

Police continue to investigate and urge anyone with information to contact detectives at (770) 513‑5300, as the Gwinnett community mourns the loss of a young life cut short in an accident that has left many searching for answers.
