Orangeburg County Crash Takes Life of 21‑Year‑Old Dirt Bike Rider

Orangeburg County — Nickolas Washington had plans, people who knew him say. On a Friday night, he was just riding his dirt bike down U.S. Highway 178 near Boyd Road when everything changed.

Around 8:08 p.m., a Chevrolet Tahoe heading east turned left into a driveway. Washington was coming the opposite way on his Kawasaki dirt bike. The two vehicles collided hard. Neighbors who heard sirens later said the scene was quiet and sad.

Emergency crews rushed Washington to MUSC Health Orangeburg. Doctors and nurses worked to save him, but the injuries were too severe. He died later that night. He was just 21.

Bethune‑Bowman High School knew Nickolas well. He graduated in 2022 and was part of the school’s Mohawk family. Staff and students released a tribute saying his smile and presence had meant a lot to classmates and teachers. They said the halls of the school feel different now, quieter.

The driver of the Tahoe walked away without injury. State Highway Patrol is still looking into what led up to the crash. Friends say they hope answers come soon.

People who live nearby are still shaken. Some say they remember seeing Nickolas ride through town, waving to neighbors. On Friday, that familiar figure didn’t come home.
