Gurbhej Singh, Southall: Tragic midnight knife attack cuts down young immigrant whose family risked everything to buy his ticket to a better life

A young man leaves his small village with big dreams. His family risks everything they own to give him a shot at a better life abroad. But that beautiful dream turned into a horrific nightmare on a dark sidewalk in London.

Gurbhej Singh was only 26 years old when a fatal knife attack ended his life. The young man was originally from Mehdipur village in the Punjab region of India. He moved to the United Kingdom back in 2022 to build a solid future.

To get him to the UK, his father Mukhtiar Singh had to make a massive sacrifice. Mukhtiar is a humble farmer who works five acres of land. The family spent nearly 24 lakh rupees, which is roughly 28,000 American dollars, to fund Gurbhej’s journey.

Friends in West London knew Gurbhej as a deeply kind and respectful guy. He always treated people with dignity and worked incredibly hard every single day. His main goal was to earn a living and help lift up his loved ones back home.

The violence erupted just after midnight on a quiet Wednesday. Gurbhej was standing right outside a local shop when an attacker blindsided him. Paramedics rushed to the scene but they could not save the young man.

Another man in his 30s was also wounded during the frantic scuffle. Thankfully, medics treated him at a nearby hospital and doctors released him shortly after. Meanwhile, the close-knit Indian diaspora is completely heartbroken over the loss of Gurbhej.

A community fundraiser is currently underway to help send Gurbhej’s body back to his parents in Punjab. Mourners have already raised thousands of dollars to cover the sudden funeral costs. A bright young life is gone, leaving a family to mourn their terrible loss across the ocean.
