Layne Michael Smith Lake Wales: A late-night off-road ride near River Ranch Hunt Club turned deadly after a 19-year-old Bartow man lost his life in a violent ATV rollover just after 2:30 a.m. on May 31, 2026.
The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said deputies and fire rescue crews were called to the remote stretch of County Road 630 after reports of a serious ATV crash deep inside the River Ranch Hunt Club property near Lake Wales, Florida. Because of how far off the roadway the scene was, agricultural unit vehicles had to bring first responders into the area.

Investigators say Layne Michael Smith had been riding with friends on off-road trails when he became separated from the group. The ride, which was meant to be recreational, quickly turned into a desperate search when his friends noticed he was no longer with them.
After retracing their path through the dark terrain, the group eventually found him trapped beneath an overturned ATV. He was still showing signs of life at first, described as semi-conscious, but his condition worsened within minutes.
Witnesses at the scene said immediate CPR was started while emergency responders worked their way through the difficult terrain. Despite those efforts, he did not survive the injuries from the crash.
Authorities believe the ATV flipped after its wheels dug into soft soil while Smith attempted a sharp turn on the trail. Officials also noted he was not wearing a helmet or protective gear at the time, which may have worsened the outcome.
Family and friends in Bartow are now dealing with the sudden shock of losing a teenager who, by all accounts, had been full of plans, energy, and close relationships. Those who knew him described a young man who spent most of his time with friends and outdoors.
As the investigation continues, the focus has shifted to grief and remembrance. What remains is the image of a routine ride that ended in irreversible loss, leaving a community trying to process how quickly everything changed.
