Michael, 71, and Lynette, 69, were tight-knit mainstays of their small community back home just west of Lafayette. Friends knew them as an adventurous pair who loved nothing more than hitting the highway together. This weekend was no different, with their trusted Honda Gold Wing trike packed up and a small trailer hitched to the back for the journey.
As they rolled through Orange County, Texas, the heavy traffic of Interstate 10 was moving along like any other Sunday. This stretch of highway is a massive lifeline for the Gulf Coast, constantly buzzing with folks traveling between Houston and New Orleans. The Douvios were just a couple of standard travelers among thousands, enjoying the steady hum of the pavement.
Then, out of absolutely nowhere, disaster struck near mile marker 868. The rear tire on the couple’s motorcycle suffered a sudden, violent blowout at highway speeds. In a split second, the heavy trike became impossible to control as the trailing weight yanked it sideways.
