The quiet town of Whiteville, North Carolina woke up to heartbreaking news Wednesday morning after longtime fitness coach and business owner Cynthia Hansen died following a violent assault at her gym. The tragedy unfolded early March 11 inside Stronger Body Fitness, the small but well-known studio she ran at 711 North Thompson Street.
Police say the assault happened sometime between 5:30 a.m. and 6:30 a.m., a time when Hansen was often already at work preparing for the day’s clients. Officers with the Whiteville Police Department were called to the scene after receiving reports of a woman who had been attacked inside the building. When they arrived, Hansen was still conscious but badly injured.

Emergency responders rushed her to Columbus Regional Healthcare System, hoping doctors could save her. But despite those efforts, Hansen later died from her injuries at the hospital. Her death has since been classified as a homicide, and investigators say the case remains active.
The Whiteville Police Department quickly secured the area around the fitness studio. Portions of North Thompson Street near East Smith Street were closed for hours as investigators worked through the scene, gathering evidence and trying to piece together exactly what happened inside the gym that morning.
Agents with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation joined local officers to assist with the case. Authorities say they are actively following leads but have not yet released details about a suspect or what may have led to the attack.
Hansen, 71, was not just a business owner in town. She was a familiar face to many people who came through the doors of Stronger Body Fitness. Clients and neighbors describe her as someone deeply committed to helping others stay healthy and strong, often greeting members early in the morning with encouragement and a smile.
Police Chief Paul Rockenbach said Hansen was widely known throughout the community. Many residents had trained with her over the years, and several regular clients visited the gym almost every day. News of her death quickly spread across Whiteville, leaving many stunned and grieving.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging anyone who might have information about the assault to contact the Whiteville Police Department. For now, a small North Carolina town is left mourning the loss of a woman whose life revolved around lifting others up—both physically and personally.
