The Johnson County community is grappling with the sudden death of 46-year-old Lawrence James Bohnenkamp, an Iowa City resident who was found unresponsive inside his cell at the Johnson County Jail early Wednesday morning. Jail staff discovered Bohnenkamp around 4 a.m., according to officials, triggering an urgent response inside the facility.
Correctional officers immediately began lifesaving efforts as soon as they realized Bohnenkamp was not responding. Emergency medical personnel were called to the jail while staff continued trying to revive him. Despite those efforts, Bohnenkamp could not be saved and was later pronounced dead.

Authorities say the circumstances surrounding his death are now under investigation. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation has taken the lead in the case, working alongside the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office to determine exactly what happened during the early morning hours inside the jail.
An autopsy is currently being conducted at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Officials say the results will help clarify the cause of death and whether any medical condition or other factors contributed to the incident. As required by state law, the State Jail Inspector has also been notified.
Outside the investigation, the loss has struck a deep emotional chord among people who knew Bohnenkamp personally. Family members describe him as a kind and gentle man who cared deeply about the people around him. Those closest to him say he was known for his humor and the quiet way he supported friends and relatives during difficult moments.
Loved ones remember Bohnenkamp as a devoted son and a loyal sibling who valued family ties. Friends say he had a way of lifting spirits, often using simple gestures or lighthearted jokes to make people feel seen and appreciated.
As the investigation continues, the family is asking for privacy while they process the shock of his passing. Funeral and memorial arrangements have not yet been announced. In the meantime, members of the community are honoring Bohnenkamp’s memory in their own way, reflecting on the compassion he showed during his life and the space his absence now leaves behind.
