Marshall County Crash: Michael Vebert Killed in State Road 8 Collision

The loss hit hard and fast. On a quiet stretch of State Road 8 in Marshall County, 46-year-old Michael Vebert of Fort Wayne lost his life in a violent crash that has left a community in mourning.

It happened Tuesday, March 24, 2026. Investigators say Michael was driving his 2008 Mercury Sable eastbound when he approached the intersection with State Road 17. For reasons still under review, his vehicle failed to yield. In seconds, it collided with a southbound 2018 Freightliner semi-tractor-trailer.

The impact was severe. Michael was pronounced dead at the scene. Just like that, a life described by many as warm and steady was gone.

Inside his vehicle were two passengers—an adult in the front seat and a juvenile in the back. Both survived but were hurt. Emergency crews rushed them to Memorial Hospital in South Bend, where they remain under care.

The driver of the semi, 61-year-old Mitchell Sailor of Elkhart, was not injured. He declined medical treatment at the scene.

First responders moved quickly. Teams from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Plymouth Fire and EMS, Culver EMS, and the county coroner’s office all worked together, trying to manage the aftermath of a crash that had already taken so much.

Back in Fort Wayne, the grief is personal. Michael Vebert is being remembered as a devoted family man, the kind of neighbor who showed up, and a friend who stayed loyal. People talk about his laugh, his presence, and the way he made others feel seen.

His family is preparing funeral arrangements, while friends and neighbors try to process the sudden loss. For many, the road ahead feels quieter without him. But his memory, they say, will not fade.
