The quiet of a Friday evening in Chicago’s West Garfield Park was shattered by gunfire, leaving three people dead and another fighting for his life. The violence unfolded fast, and for those who witnessed it, the shock has not worn off.
It happened around 4:45 p.m. on the 4000 block of West Maypole Avenue. Four people were standing together on a sidewalk, likely expecting nothing more than an ordinary end to the day. Then a vehicle pulled up, changing everything in seconds.
Police say at least two individuals stepped out of the car and opened fire on the group. The attack was sudden and direct. Before anyone could react or find safety, bullets had already done their damage. The shooters quickly returned to the vehicle and fled, leaving chaos behind.
A 36-year-old man was struck multiple times. He died right there on the sidewalk. Nearby, a 32-year-old woman was hit in the head. She was rushed to Stroger Hospital, where doctors tried to save her, but she later died from her injuries.
Another victim, an adult man whose age has not yet been released, also suffered multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, but he did not survive. A fourth victim, a 35-year-old man, remains in critical condition at Stroger Hospital, holding on as doctors continue treatment.
In the minutes that followed, the neighborhood filled with sirens and flashing lights. Police quickly secured the area. Investigators focused heavily on a nearby barbershop, moving in and out while maintaining a tight perimeter.
Traffic along Pulaski Road between Maypole Avenue and Lake Street was shut down as officers worked the scene. Residents gathered nearby, some standing quietly, others comforting each other. The weight of what had just happened was clear on their faces.
Detectives from Area Four are now leading the investigation. As of now, no suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made. For a neighborhood already familiar with hardship, this moment adds another layer of grief that won’t fade easily.
