Brandon, Mississippi, Death: Walter and Amanda Birdsong killed in bitter family land dispute that ended in murder-suicide

A quiet stretch of Monterey Road in Rankin County turned into a heavily guarded crime scene Friday afternoon after a deadly family dispute ended with three people dead, including the suspected gunman.

Authorities said 62-year-old Walter E. Birdsong Jr. and 43-year-old Amanda L. Birdsong were shot and killed during a violent confrontation tied to a long-running disagreement over family land. Deputies with the Rankin County Sheriff’s Office were called to the 1400 block of Monterey Road shortly before 4 p.m. after a frantic 911 call reported that two people had been shot and the armed suspect had barricaded himself inside a home on the property.

Investigators later identified the suspect as 56-year-old Kurt Tyler Birdsong, a relative of the victims. According to officials, deputies surrounded the residence and attempted several times to make contact with him, but there was no response from inside the house.

The situation quickly escalated into a major law enforcement operation. SWAT teams, negotiators, and technical response units flooded the area as neighbors were evacuated from nearby homes out of fear for public safety. Authorities said the family’s connection to a firearms manufacturing business raised serious concerns about what weapons or dangerous materials could have been inside the residence.

Federal and state agencies soon joined the response, including the FBI Jackson Field Office, the ATF, the Mississippi Office of Homeland Security, and the Clinton Bomb Squad. Officials described the scene as high-risk because of the family’s ties to W.E. Birdsong & Associates Inc., a firearms-related company based on Monterey Road in nearby Florence.

The business has operated since 1973 and is known for producing Black-T, a specialized weapons coating reportedly used by military and government clients. Because of that connection, authorities approached the standoff with extreme caution while armored vehicles moved into the area.

After repeated attempts to communicate with Kurt Tyler Birdsong failed, deputies eventually used armored and technical equipment to breach the home. Inside a bathroom, they discovered the suspect dead from what investigators believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Rankin County Deputy Coroner Cliff Dunlap responded to the scene and transported the bodies for further examination. Investigators continue working to piece together exactly what happened in the final moments before the shooting erupted.

For many residents in the normally peaceful community, the violence was difficult to process. Neighbors watched emergency vehicles line the road for hours as officers secured the area and investigators moved carefully through the property. What started as a family disagreement over land ended in a tragedy that left three relatives dead and an entire community shaken.
