A deadly shooting inside a Baton Rouge shoe store has left a family grieving and a Louisiana community once again wrestling with the pain of gun violence. Police said 28-year-old Na’Quail Weaver died days after he was shot during a violent incident at The Athlete’s Foot along Florida Boulevard.
The shooting happened during the afternoon of May 14 near North Foster Drive. According to investigators, officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department rushed to the scene around 3:07 p.m. after reports of gunfire erupted at the store. When they arrived, they found Weaver suffering from a severe gunshot wound.

Witnesses nearby said the situation unfolded fast and sent customers and workers scrambling in fear. Some people reported seeing a fight break out in the parking lot moments before shots rang out. By the time police reached the store, the suspected shooter had already left the area.
Emergency crews transported Weaver to a local hospital, where doctors fought to save his life. For days, loved ones held onto hope as he remained in critical condition. But despite those efforts, the East Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office later confirmed Weaver had died from his injuries.
The news spread quickly across Baton Rouge and left many residents shaken. Friends and family members remembered Weaver as more than just another victim in a police investigation. To the people who knew him, he was someone deeply loved, someone whose life ended far too early.
As detectives worked the case, authorities announced that 26-year-old Deandre Selmon turned himself in over the weekend with his attorney beside him. Police initially booked Selmon into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on charges of attempted second-degree murder. Following Weaver’s death, investigators are expected to review additional or upgraded charges as the case continues moving forward.
Police have not publicly explained what caused the confrontation or what relationship, if any, existed between the men involved. Detectives continue interviewing witnesses, reviewing evidence, and piecing together exactly what happened during the chaotic moments leading up to the gunfire.
For many people in Baton Rouge, the tragedy has become another painful reminder of how quickly violence can change lives forever. What started as an ordinary afternoon at a neighborhood business ended with a young man dead and another facing serious criminal accusations. Now, a grieving family is left carrying the heartbreak.
