It’s been more than a day since Taylor Sylver, a 38-year-old Charlotte woman, was shot once in the chest and left to die near one of the city’s busiest nightlife strips — and the person who did it hasn’t been caught yet. Not arrested, not named, not even described publicly. Just out there somewhere, while Taylor’s sister grieves alone.
The shooting went down just after 2 in the morning on Thursday, May 21, 2026, on the 3200 block of North Davidson Street in Charlotte’s NoDa neighborhood — a stretch of road packed with bars, restaurants, and apartment buildings. Police were called to the scene near East 35th Street, and when officers got there, they found Taylor on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. MEDIC transported her to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, but she didn’t survive.

CMPD officially classified it as a homicide by 5:30 that same morning. North Davidson Street was shut down at 35th while detectives from the Homicide Unit worked the scene. And then came the part that’s now making people uneasy — when the sun came up and police gave their update, there was no suspect information. No description. No arrest. Nothing.
A family friend who spoke to local media said Taylor had gotten mixed up with the wrong crowd. That statement raises obvious questions — questions that only the person who pulled that trigger can fully answer. What led to this? Was it a dispute? A confrontation that spiraled out of control? Police haven’t released any details about the circumstances that brought Taylor to that corner at 2 in the morning, or what happened in the moments before the shot was fired.
What we do know is this: Taylor Sylver was a woman from a good family, by every account. Her parents had already passed, and her only immediate family member is her sister. Someone took the last close family member that sister had left. And as of now, that someone is still unaccounted for.
The CMPD Homicide Unit is actively working the investigation, and detectives are asking the public for help. If you were in the NoDa area near North Davidson and 35th Street around 2 a.m. on Thursday, May 21, or if you know anything at all about this shooting, you’re being asked to call 704-432-8477 to speak directly with a homicide detective. Anonymous tips can also be left through Crime Stoppers.
Charlotte has seen its share of violence, but something about this one lingers. A woman with no immediate family except a sister, shot once in the chest in a neighborhood full of people — and nobody’s been held accountable yet. The pressure is on CMPD to find whoever did this. Taylor Sylver’s family, and this city, deserve that much.
